Can I put my PC against the wall?

13 Apr.,2024

I share my office with my wife and am trying to save space, and keep noise from the PC mitigated. It's a huge PC with lots of drives (unRAID server), so getting it out of the way while still being able to use it would be nice. Right now it's in the large backroom and I only remote into it, but it would be useful to be able to use it at my desk without remoting.

There is an understairs closet on the other side of the wall where my PC is. I could put it in there and then the cables would come through the wall to my desk.

Obviously this would require some airflow modifications. I was thinking of putting PC on ground where its cool, and having a 2-3 fans sucking cool air in to the room. Near the top of the room id put 1-2 fans blowing air out (so the room would have positive air pressure.

Anyone have experience with this?

I am buying a new pc and placing it in a pc holder under my desk and i am wondering how much clearance i should have ontop, behind, and on each side of the pc for good airflow. I dont want to risk damaging my pc due to a lack of airflow.

It's really dependent upon where the fans are on your tower. Most people have exhaust fans on the back of their case, though this can be modified. It also matters where your intake fans are, and most cases these are usually on the front, but again this may be changed. You just want to make sure there's room where the fans are, so that cool air can be pulled into the case without interference, and hot air can be pushed out.

Other than that, it doesn't really matter where anything is to the proximity of your case. I have plenty of stuff lying on top and around my case and the temps are just fine and the case is good to go. Obviously I don't put anything too heavy on top of my case so as to weaken it, nor do I put anything super hot around it.

How much clearance should you have around a PC?
