6 Ways to Replace Spot Welding Electrode Cap

This post will share 6 replacement tips on spot welding electrode caps

1. Dedicated spanner method (recommended)
Scenario:Purple Filament Chalk Paint BrushStandard electrode cap (with dedicated notch or bayonet design).
Steps:
. Disconnect the power and wait for the unit to cool down.
. Snap the special spanner into the groove of the electrode cap and turn counterclockwise to remove it.
. After cleaning the contact surface of the electrode rod, install the new electrode cap and tighten it.
. Advantage: Safe and efficient, avoiding damage to the electrode rod.

2. Mobile spanner/open-end wrench
Scenario: electrode caps with threaded connection (emergency use when no special tool is available).
Steps:
. Select a suitable size spanner and clamp the outer edge of the electrode cap.
Slowly rotate the cap to avoid slipping and scratching the surface.
Note: Control the force, excessive force may damage the threads.

3. Puller Removal Method
Scenario: Electrode caps with conical fit (when larger pulling force is required).
Steps:
Attach the puller claw hook to the edge of the cap.
Turn the handle to apply axial tension and slowly pull out the old cap.
After cleaning the taper, tap the new cap until it fits.
Advantage: Avoids direct tapping and protects the accuracy of the equipment.
4. Hydraulic/pneumatic tool assisted method
Scenario: Heavy equipment or stubborn electrode caps.
Steps:
Use a hydraulic puller or pneumatic spanner to attach the electrode cap.
Remove the cap with stable torque or pulling force from the power tool output.
Note: Calibrate the tool parameters to prevent overloading and damaging the equipment.
5. Heated Expansion Method (use with caution)
Scenario: Difficulty in removing the electrode cap from the electrode rod due to oxidation/overfitting.
Steps:
Use hot air gun or induction heater to locally heat the electrode cap (avoid high temperature oxidation).
Remove quickly with tools after the metal expands.
Risks: Excessive heating may affect the material properties and requires specialised personnel.
6. Knock Loosening Method (Emergency Backup)
Scenario: No professional tools and the electrode cap is slightly stuck.
Steps:
Tap the side of the electrode cap with a copper rod or cork mallet to shake off rust or debris.
Rotate the cap with a spanner to remove it.
Note: Do not hammer directly on the top of the cap, as it may deform or damage the internal structure.

General Precautions
Safety First: Be sure to disconnect power, relieve pressure, and cool equipment before operation.
Cleaning and inspection: Clean the contact surface of the electrode rod before installation to ensure that there is no oxidation or burr.
Parameter Adjustment: After replacement, calibration of pressure, current and other parameters is required, as well as a trial welding test.
Regular maintenance: set the replacement cycle according to the frequency of welding to avoid excessive wear and tear.
