This is perhaps the biggest question when going into any business. But here we are talking about starting your own fence business. Contracting can be pretty lucrative in general, but there are so many variables involved with each contracting service. There are a variety of contractor businesses you can start, but I personally feel fencing is one of the best because it meets 2 key criteria; high volume AND high ticket.
It really depends on how much you charge. Are you doing the work yourself or are you subcontracting the work? If you are subbing the fence installations, the math is pretty easy. Most often it's a lump sum of materials and labor, so you can just add on your commission on top of that. Or if you are just subbing the labor and handling the fence materials yourself, add your percentage onto each piece of the puzzle.
But before we do that, you need to figure out your overhead costs.
Once you figure out the answers to these questions, you can start to figure out what you need to make to cover your costs, and most importantly, turn a profit.
Personally, I shoot for a 40-50% profit margin on every job. But at the same time, you win some and you lose some. You'll want to cover all of your overhead expenses, pay yourself, and ensure you are swinging a strong profit margin upwards of 40% after its all said and done.
Never undercut yourself, and always sell on value. You never want to be the low cost leader. I always tell people, "I never want to be the Wal-Mart of fencing." If you're the lowest guy in the area, chances are you won't be in business much longer. Charge high, but prove your value. If you are exactly like everyone else, than you can't demand more money.
In any business, you need to stand out from the competition. How do you do that? Offer a "quality guarantee", offer better customer service, offer a lifetime warranty, the list is endless. Just make sure you choose something so you can stand out and charge more. Otherwise if you charge more and don't offer the corresponding value proposition, then you are just price gouging and customers will not be happy with you.
With competitive price and timely delivery, BONKFC sincerely hope to be your supplier and partner.
Fence Business Profitability
The profitability of any fence company depends on a few different things:
Never compare yourself to what others are charging in your local market. They may be selling at a loss altogether and willing to buy the business, but you shouldn't. Plus, other fence companies have different overhead, pay their employees differently, etc.
As mentioned, fencing has 2 main attributes that make this a very profitable business model. First, it's high ticket. Most fences are in the $8,000 - $12,000 range on average for full fenced yards. Even higher for vinyl and other high ticket materials like composite fencing. Second, it's high volume. In modern-day American suburbia, everyone has a fence. They need to be replaced and repaired quite often. There's a huge market for new fence installation period. If you are positioned appropriately in your local market, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be getting 100-200 calls on a weekly basis consistently.
How do I get 100-200 calls a week? Organic search marketing, no paid ads, no HomeAdvisor, no Thumbtack, none of that. Let us help you, click the link below.
With that type of volume and high ticket, add on a 40-50% profit margin and you are making a few thousand dollars on every job. Sell a few a week yourself, with very little overhead, and you can be sitting in a very good position.
The other upside of the fence business is that it can be operated out of your home. No need to have a big warehouse with material, hire a bunch of full-time crews, or even own equipment. If you subcontract all of it, you don't have to own even one piece of equipment. The only real expenses will be legal fees (business setup, etc), marketing, advertising, and consulting.
This may all sound foreign to you, or even out of reach, but it really isn't. I've done it myself with zero experience in contracting. I can show you every step of the way to get you making six figures in your very first year.
