Whoa, way to drag up a 2 year old thread - do you work for F H Brundles?

Personally, I think you shouldn't used this mass produced rubbish, and if you tell people you're a metalworker you should back that statement up by actually producing your metalwork. Any idiot can order parts from a catalogue.

All this rubbish with casting-lines across it and a general lack of attention to design ('railing-by-numbers') is pathetic and really should only apply to beginners, IMHO.

Al.

It's a question of price though isn't it? If you wanted me to make you a gate you're into serious money, if you don't want to pay for hand forging then go elsewhere. Not everyone can afford thousands for a gate, what are they supposed to do, have a wooden one instead?

that could apply to anything. do u buy hand crafted furniture or mass produced .do u buy a mass produced car or a hand built one . convinience and price thats what its down to. wrought iron is only a figure of speech anyhow Astro al, Grrr grrr Kill Kill.
Interesting points.
I am wary of mass produced components being used to make 'wrought iron' gates, but it does help some people get cheap installations.

Bespoke is definitely better, I have mates who do amazing traditional wrought iron with contemporary influences, which I love. I also see some 'nice' gates welded up from stock parts, and dont really like them. I fact I dont like them at all.

Then again I see some revolting but beautifully forged gates and railings.

What really annoys me is people who make out that it is real bespoke work when they have just fabbed up a load of mass produced parts.

Yes an old thread but with an interesting spin on it.

I'd absolutely agree with all of that, especially and doubly the fabbed up mass produced parts when they try and pass it off as proper ironwork. I always like to see good forgework though, even if I really don't like the end result, but then I'm using my ironwork eyes, rather than my normal "oh my god that's awful" eyes Julian
I am glad you understand that one. I have had some hilarious arguments with blacksmiths.
What I do is not blacksmithing, woe betide anybody who calles me a blacksmith.
Back to my point. I have been slagged off horribly by blacksmiths as my work is 'Just fabrication' 'just welded'. Ballocks I says, what I do is honest.
round Ross there are lots of new smiths from Holme Lacy and they seem to be brainwashed. 'There is no tradition' is my favourite criticism of what I do. Of course there isn't, but I like it.
Are you a blacksmithing Nazi?
You dont sound like one.
Interestingly I have been a bad influence on some of the guys (and guyesses) I know, and I have seen them using Satans own tool in their work. Mig welding!!! burn them at the stake now, heretics.
