The widely use of plastics for many daily applications is one of the most important innovations of the past century I think, while many industries previously rely largely on traditional materials like metal, glass, etc. Plastics has entered large production since World War II, during the past centuries plastics has suited to almost every conceivable use.
Plastics are the common name for man made polymers. Generally speaking, plastics are much safe for human beings, economical and widely available, and are produced with a wide variety of material properties that allow adaptation to many different applications. Here are 10 of the most common thermoplastics used in injection moulding, which will help you to select the right plastic materials for injection moulding.
1.Polyethylene (PE), Technical name Polythylene(PE)(a.k.a polythene, polythene or polymethylene) .Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer with variable crystalline structure and an extremely large range of applications. Tens of millions of tons are produced worldwide each year. There are a number of different variants of PE. Low and high density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE respectively) are the two most common ones, Ultra High Molecular Weight PE (UHMWPE) is also used very often, for example, bulletproof vests, etc.
LDPE: LDPE is the king of disposable packaging, it has high ductility but low tensile strength.
HDPE:HDPE is used almost anywhere cheap rigid plastic, like food packaging, toys and pipes.
UHMW: Extremely strong plastic that can rival or even exceed steel in strength and is used is for applications like medical devices (e.g. artificial hips).
Applications: Consumer products, houseware items, electronic wire/cable insulators and medical products, etc
2.Polypropelene (PP), Technical name(PP) ,Polypropylene is one of the most adaptable thermoplastics, which has a high melting point, acid resistant, and the best it is relatively inexpensive. Polypropylene is a very useful plastic material for injection moulding. It has a variety of applications, such as packaging for consumer products, plastic parts for various industries including the automotive industry or others.
3.Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET), known as polyester. Commonly abbreviated PET, PETE, or the obsolete PETP or PET-P, is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in fibres for clothing, containers for liquids and foods, thermoforming for manufacturing, and in combination with glass fibre for engineering resins.(From Wikipedia). It is mostly used to make plastic bottle, almost every plastic bottle you have ever seen is PET or PETE.
4.Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS). ABS is thermoplastic and amorphous polymer which is often used in the automotive industry accessories, such as consoles, panels, trims, vents etc. Strong and flexible, chemically resistant and relatively low manufacturing cost ensures it’s common use for injection moulding process. It is also often used for plastic boxes, plastic gauges, plastic housings, medical plastic parts and plastic toy parts. Common applications: Computer housings, small appliances, automotive interior trim and medical components, etc.
5.Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). PVC is the world's third-most widely used and produced plastic material, following polyethylene and polypropylene. Common use of PVC is construction for pipe and other sheet materials for doors and windows. Also it can be used in making bottles, non-food packaging, and cards. plumbing, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather, flooring, signage, phonograph records, inflatable products, etc.
6.Polyamide (PA), PA usually we call it Nylon which has many variants. It is strong, hardy and wide color range. It is significantly more expensive than plastics such as PP, and is usually reserved for when toughness is needed.

7.Polycarbonate, (PC). Benefits of Polycarbonate relative to other plastics and materials are transparent and high strength. Originally PC is used to some products which requires strength, such as baby bottles, but now days PC is mostly used as an engineering plastic, for example, polycarbonate greenhouse, riot gear for police, etc.
8.Polystyrene, (PS). Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon polymer made from the monomer styrene. Polystyrene can be solid or foamed. PS has three different types, General Purpose (GPPS) ,High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) ,Expanded Polystyrene. Polystyrene is used widely in packaging under the trade name “styrofoam.”
Applications: Household Goods, Containers, Furniture, Housings and Packaging.
9.Polyoxymethylene, (POM). Commonly we would call it Acetal. POM is also a high strength engineering plastic, which can compete with PC. But it is not clear, so it is hard to colour. However it has a higher resistance to heat, is stiffer, has low friction and keeps its shape better. It is often used for moving mechanical parts such as bindings, gears, wheels, sides and locking parts.
Applications: Mechanical Automotive, Business Machine and Household Appliance, Components i.e. Slides, Gears, Cams, Bushings, Door Handles and Seat Belt Parts, etc.
10.Polyurethane, (PU). One of the most chemically flexible plastics , which is a resilient, extremely tough abrasion and tear resistant elastomeric injection molding plastic material. PU can be either thermoforming or thermosetting, When injection moulded softer, highly flexible forms of PU are often used. These diverse formulations cover an extremely wide range of stiffness, hardness, and densities. Normal applications of PU , such as gaskets, seals, bushings, connectors, electrical parts, etc.
Of course, there are many many different kinds of plastic materials as to different Chemical formula deformations, but for our common use we would only discuss like this, for special purposes, pls talk to us directly, welcome to send us
